Everything You Need to Know About The American Institute of Architects

The American Institute of Architects (AIA) is a stately institution founded in the 1800s to establish a strict level of standards for being an architect. The AIA is a membership based organization that focuses on providing education, professional development, government advocacy and seeks to education the public about the profession of architecture.

The AIA is made up of over 90,000 licensed architects. When an architect becomes a member of the AIA they take on a pledge to follow an established code of professional conduct and a standard of ethics. This is meant to ensure the public, fellow architect’s and, of course, their clients that they follow the upmost standards in the professional practice of architecture.

When the AIA was originally established in the 1800s by 13 elite architects, there were virtually no standards or ethics rules that all architects needed to adhere to. Additionally, almost anyone could call themselves an architect, even without any advanced training. The AIA changed all of that by creating these standards and by working on a membership model that meant people needed to join to earn the accreditation.

The American Institute of Architecture has a unique five levels of membership. Depending on their involvement and career level, many architects join different membership levels as their careers evolve.

These levels include Architect Members which are licensed to practice in the United States. Associate Members are working under the close supervision of a licensed architect and have earned an advanced degree in architecture or are earning their credit toward getting that license. An architect with a license outside of the U.S. can gain membership as an International Associate Member. Emeritus Members quality for that level of their membership if they are at least 65 years old and have been a member for at least 15 years. A person can become an Allied Member of the AIA if they work in a profession that is considered related to architecture such as a planner or engineer. Follow at
